TURKEY MOUNTAIN HIKING
Need a Second Class 5-Mile Hike,
Working on the Hiking Merit Badge
or Training for Philmont?
The Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area, located west of the Arkansas River between 71st Street and I-44, has 330 acres owned and managed by the City of Tulsa and River Parks Authority. The main entrance to the wilderness area is located off of Elwood Ave. just north of the 71st Street & Elwood Ave. traffic light intersection.
Turkey Mountain, a Tulsa visual landmark, is one of the most breath-taking features of River Parks and the wilderness area is being kept in its natural state, except for a main parking lot, fencing and trails. At 900 ft. above sea level, the mountain provides a spectacular panoramic view of the Arkansas River and the city of Tulsa. The wilderness area has enormous sandstone and limestone bluffs, ponds, and numerous hilly and undulating trails.
Turkey Mountain now has three (3) marked trails; a one-mile, a two-mile and a five-mile loop, thanks to a Troop 1 Eagle Scout candidate. Each trail has a name and a designated color to follow. At the main parking lot there is a trailhead sign which notes the trails and displays a topographical map of the entire trail system. For an individual topographical map of the trails, you can go to the River Parks web site (www.riverparks.org) and under Maps, print out a trail map of Turkey Mountain.
With the major improvements over the past four years, a new facilities for parking, Up With Trees project, trash removal, and a marked trail system you see numerous people mountain biking, and horseback riding, and families hiking the trails of Turkey Mountain.
When hiking remember to Be Prepared, take water, wear proper clothing & boots, pack the ten essentials, bring a map & compass, let someone know where you are hiking and hike with a companion.
